1. Assessments

Before growth comes awareness. Our personalized assessments are designed to evaluate where you are today and identify the path to where you want to be. For individuals, assessments provide insight into skill gaps and opportunities for development. For organizations, assessments reveal key accessibility challenges and areas for improvement.

What We Assess:

  • Technology Skills Assessments – Evaluate proficiency with screen readers (JAWS, NVDA, VoiceOver), braille displays, and essential software tools like Microsoft Office and Google Workspace.
  • Accessibility Audits for Individuals – Identify the assistive technology, tools, and strategies that can increase your independence.
  • Workplace Accessibility Assessments – Assess the accessibility of a physical or virtual workplace, ensuring that blind employees can perform essential functions with confidence.

How It Works:

  1. Initial Consultation – We learn about your needs, goals, and challenges.
  2. Comprehensive Evaluation – Our experts conduct an in-depth assessment, whether it’s on-site, remote, or self-guided.
  3. Actionable Report – Receive a clear, detailed summary of findings with specific recommendations.

2. Training

Training is at the heart of what we do. Through personalized instruction, we teach clients how to master non-visual skills, access technology, and professional development essentials. Our training empowers individuals to overcome challenges and achieve independence in personal, professional, and entrepreneurial pursuits.

What We Teach:

  • Access Technology Training – Learn to master screen readers (JAWS, NVDA, VoiceOver), braille displays, and essential software like Microsoft Office, Google Workspace, and job-specific applications.
  • Professional Development Training – Gain critical workplace skills such as résumé writing, job interview preparation, and workplace communication.
  • Entrepreneurship Training – For those with big dreams, we offer training on how to launch, manage, and grow your own business as a blind entrepreneur.

How It Works:

  1. Choose Your Learning Method – Access in-person, live virtual, or self-paced training via our VO Academy platform.
  2. Customized Curriculum – Every client’s journey is different, so we tailor the lessons to meet your specific needs and goals.
  3. Ongoing Support – We don’t just teach you and walk away. We provide ongoing support and resources to ensure your continued growth and success.

Vision Optional’s consulting services help businesses, agencies, and organizations ensure that their digital platforms, physical spaces, and workplace environments are accessible to employees and customers who are blind or visually impaired. Our expertise spans accessibility compliance, usability, and inclusion.

4. Pre-Employment Transition Services (Pre-ETS)

Under the Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act (WIOA), Pre-Employment Transition Services (Pre-ETS) play a critical role in preparing students with disabilities for competitive, integrated employment. Vision Optional provides Pre-ETS that align directly with WIOA requirements while remaining firmly focused on what matters most:
equipping blind and low vision students with the skills, expectations, and confidence needed to enter the workforce successfully.
For blind and low vision students, the transition from school to work is not just about exposure to careers. It is about building independence, developing practical skills, and learning how to navigate environments that were not designed with blindness in mind. Our Pre-ETS services are intentionally structured to support students as they move from exploration to readiness, and from readiness to action.

What We Support Through Pre-ETS (WIOA-Aligned):

Job Exploration
Counseling

In alignment with WIOA, we help students explore career interests, understand labor market expectations, and connect personal strengths to realistic employment pathways.

Work-Based Learning Experiences

We support participation in job shadowing, internships, paid or unpaid work experiences, and volunteer opportunities, with attention to accessibility, task analysis, and problem-solving as a blind worker in real environments.

Counseling on Postsecondary Education and Training Options

Students receive guidance on college, vocational training, apprenticeships, and certification programs, including early consideration of accessibility, accommodations, and access technology needs that often impact long-term success.

Workplace Readiness Training

Consistent with WIOA’s focus on readiness, we teach essential soft skills such as communication, time management, professional behavior, and workplace expectations, with blindness-specific context that prepares students for real employment settings.

Instruction in Self-Advocacy

We help students learn how to articulate access needs, request accommodations appropriately, and engage with employers, educators, and supervisors as capable young professionals.

Access Technology and Non-Visual Skill Foundations

Access technology and non-visual skills are not optional for employment success. We support students in developing foundational competence with screen readers, braille displays, and practical non-visual strategies that support independence in school, training, and work environments.

How It Works:

Student-Centered Planning

Services are built around the student’s interests, strengths, and goals, while meeting WIOA Pre-ETS service categories and vocational rehabilitation expectations.

Flexible Service
Delivery

Pre-ETS can be provided in person or virtually, allowing agencies and schools to meet students where they are while maintaining compliance and continuity.

Meaningful, Measurable Progress

We emphasize skill development and functional outcomes that vocational rehabilitation agencies can document and build upon as students transition into additional VR services.
